The expansion plan for Noi Bai Airport until 2030 with a vision to 2050 submitted to the Ministry of Transport, would allow the airport to service the largest American and European airplanes, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing’s B777-X, B747-8, B777-300ER aircraft.

 

By 2030, the airport will have an estimated capacity of 63 million passengers and two million tons of cargo per year. To meet this need, the CAAV has proposed building a third runway that will be 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) long.

 

The airport's existing T2 terminal would be expanded to reach a capacity of 30 ~ 40 million passengers per year, and a new T3 terminal with a capacity of 30 million passengers per year.

 

By 2050, the CAAV estimates the airport will serve as many as 100 million passengers and handle 5 million tons of cargo each year. Based upon this, the airport would then add a fourth runway, as well as an terminal with an annual capacity of 25 million passengers at the site of the current terminal T1, and a new T5 terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers.

 

The airport's land use plan would follow the approved master plan for Hanoi, which allocates an additional 2,230 hectares to the airport to ensure enough land for national purposes.

 

The number of passengers and cargo passing through the Noi Bai Airport has been increasing by an average of 10% per year, with the airport receiving 26 million passengers in 2018 and 29 million passengers in 2019.

 

However, the airport was designed to handle only 25 million passengers per year, with the domestic terminal, T1 having a capacity of 15 million passengers per year and the international terminal, T2 having a capacity of 10 million passengers per year. At current rates, the airport is expected to receive 40 million passengers per year by 2025, so the CAAV believes that expansion is crucial and that construction should begin as soon as the government approves the airport expansion plans and provides funding for its expansion.
